Rev. Fr. Mathew Thundathil O.C.D
(04-03-1966 - 05-12-2017)
Rev. Fr. Mathew Thundathil OCD of our Malabar Province, the person who brought the Papal News Paper L’Osservatore Romano to be published from India both in English and Malayalam, died on Tuesday, the 5th of December 2017 at Rajagiri Hospital, Aluva. He was suffering from Stomach Cancer for about 2 years. His Funeral will be taking place at Lisieux Centre, Muvattupuzha at 11.00 a.m. on Thursday, the 7th of December 2017.
Rev. Fr. Mathew Thundathil was the Director of the Carmel International Publishing House, Trivandrum, from the year 2000. From the year 2002, through his continuous efforts and strenuous dedication, Carmel International Publishing House was given the right to publish the English Weekly Edition of L’Osservatore Romano for India. It is to be recalled that until 2002, the annual subscription fee for L’Osservatore Romano for India was $ 100.00. Ever since Fr. Mathew Thundathil brought the publishing right in India, its annual subscription fee is reduced to just $ 35.00 which still continues without ever being hiked. Outside Vatican this is the only English Edition of L’Osservatore Romano.
From the year 2008, after undergoing onerous negotiations and dedicated bureaucratic works, Fr. Mathew Thundathil brought the right for Malayalam Edition of L’Osservatore Romano, which is the first and only non-Latin Script version of it. The importance of the Malayalam Edition of L’Osservatore Romano was such that Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI on the eve of its publication stated about it as “An indispensable aid to the Evangelization of Kerala”. There had never been an ambiguity in translation of the Malayalam Edition or delay in publication of any Edition of L’Osservatore Romano in its 15 years of history. It is so obvious that there is no other way than this to make the teaching and news of the Catholic Church widely available to the Church in India. From 2015 we are publishing L’Osservatore Romano for Australia and Oceania.
Fr. Thundathil’s unparalleled proficiency in English and Malayalam kept the translation of L’Osservatore Romano and Papal Documents into Malayalam uniquely faithful to the original texts and matchlessly beautiful and readable. While, L’Osservatore Romano, in English and Malayalam, is the most unique contribution of Rev. Fr. Mathew Thundathil, to the Catholic Church in India, his other literary contributions – edition, compilation and translation of Papal Documents and other Catholic Titles and Books, unique Carmelite titles etc. make him an unmatched luminary in the area of Catholic literature.
The Malayalam Book “Layam”, his Magnum Opus, a 650 page Biographical Novel, blending the spirituality of St. Teresa of Avila and St. Edith Stein brings both the geography, history and culture of ancient Spain and Modern Germany and is an unparalleled literary and spiritual accomplishment. He has translated “Layam” into English in his Hospital bed, intending this to be translated into Spanish and German.
While doing such extensive works, he was also six years our Provincial Councillor and four years Parish Priest in the Archdiocese of Trivandrum. His literary contributions to the Indian Church have been unambiguously prolific, far-reaching and solid.
Fr. Mathew Thundathil was a rare genius with such literary brilliance, apostolic fervor and unflagging commitment to hard work. His death is irreparable both for Malabar Province and for the Indian Church. MAY HE REST IN PEACE!!
Requesting your valuable prayers for the repose of the Soul of our dear Fr. Mathew Thundathil,
